Key facts

  • The idea: at a ceramic café you paint a ready-made bisque piece (mug, bowl, plate, vase) and the studio glazes and fires it for you.
  • No experience needed: no wheel, no clay, just brushes and colours.
  • A session usually lasts 2 to 2.5 hours; a creative brunch about 3 hours.
  • In France, a mug typically costs €21 to €35 with paints, glaze and firing included; large pieces go up to about €70.
  • Your piece is ready after firing, usually within 1 to 3 weeks.
HOW IT WORKS

A ceramic café session, step by step

  1. Book your slot

Choose the café, the date and how many of you are coming. Weekend tables go fast, so it is worth booking a few days ahead.

  2. Pick your piece

There is plenty of choice: the shelves hold bisque pottery, already fired once, such as mugs, bowls, plates, vases and figurines. The price depends on the piece you choose.

  3. Paint at your own pace

Sketch in pencil first, it burns away in the kiln, then apply two or three coats of colour. The team shows you techniques and answers your questions.

  4. Collect your creation

The studio coats your piece in clear glaze and fires it. It is usually ready within 1 to 3 weeks; some cafés offer express firing or will post it to you.

PRICES

How much does a ceramic café cost?

In most French ceramic cafés, the price depends on the piece you paint and covers everything: the piece, paints, guidance, glazing and firing. Drinks are extra unless you choose a package. In the UK, most pottery cafés charge a studio fee per painter (around £5 to £10) plus the price of the piece.

On Ceramispot, each café shows a price per person that includes a basic piece (mug, bowl or small plate), paints, glazing and firing, so you know what you will pay before you book. Larger pieces and food packages are listed on the café’s page.

What you paint (France)Typical price
Small piece: egg cup, tile, small bowl€8 to €20
Mug or cup€21 to €35
Plate, large bowl€20 to €40
Vase, jug, teapot, platter€30 to €70
Session with afternoon tea or drinks, per person€35 to €50
Brunch and painting (3 hours), per person€49 to €60
Birthday or hen party group, per person€30 to €40

Ranges checked in October 2026 against the prices published by 23 ceramic cafés in France, and by London studios for the UK, where mugs usually cost £12 to £18.50 plus the studio fee. In Strasbourg, AFP puts average spending at around €40 per session, drink and snack included.

TIPS

Our tips for a great piece

Come with an idea

A photo, a pattern you saved on Pinterest or Instagram: the best cure for blank-mug syndrome.

Sketch in pencil first

Pencil lines burn away in the kiln, so you can draw, erase and start again.

Apply two or three coats

One coat often looks patchy after firing. Let each coat dry, especially when layering colours.

Ask how to use your piece

It is the clear glaze fired by the café that makes a piece food-safe. Ask the café whether it can go in the dishwasher and the microwave.

THE TREND

Ceramic cafés are everywhere now

Pottery painting cafés have been part of British high streets for years, and London’s Pottery Café presents itself as the city’s original. France caught on later: one of the first ceramic cafés in Paris opened at the end of 2018, and by spring 2026 AFP counted about ten in Paris, five each in Bordeaux and Lyon, and four in Nantes, Marseille and Strasbourg.

The appeal is simple: two hours away from your phone to let your creativity flow, and something you will use every day. Pottery painting is fun for complete beginners and regulars alike, on your own, with friends or with kids.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about ceramic cafés

What is a ceramic café?

A ceramic café combines a coffee shop with a pottery painting studio. You choose a ready-made piece that has already been fired once (mug, bowl, plate, vase), decorate it with ceramic colours, then the café glazes and fires it in the kiln. You collect your piece a few days or weeks later.

How much does a ceramic café session cost?

In France the price mainly depends on the piece: about €8 to €20 for a small piece, €21 to €35 for a mug and up to €70 for a large vase or platter, with paints, glazing and firing included. Packages with afternoon tea, drinks or brunch cost €35 to €60 per person. UK studios usually add a studio fee of around £5 to £10. On Ceramispot, the price per person is shown before you book.

Do I need to be good at drawing?

No. Stencils, sponges and design ideas are often available, and the team shows you simple techniques. Many people have never held a paintbrush before their first pottery painting session.

How long does a pottery painting session last?

Usually 2 to 2.5 hours; brunch packages last about 3 hours. The exact length is shown for each café on Ceramispot.

When can I collect my piece?

Your piece needs to be glazed and fired, so it is usually ready 1 to 3 weeks after your session in France, and often within 7 to 10 days in UK studios. Some cafés offer express firing for a small fee or will post it to you. Studios usually keep pieces for about a month, so remember to pick yours up.

Can kids paint at a ceramic café?

Yes, at most cafés. The minimum age is usually between 3 and 7 depending on the venue, with an adult; a few keep their sessions for children over 10 or 15. The minimum age is shown for each café, and many also host kids’ birthday parties.

Do I need to book?

It is strongly recommended, especially at weekends, as tables are limited. On Ceramispot you book and pay for your session online and get your confirmation by email.

Can I use my painted mug every day?

Yes. It is the clear glaze applied and fired by the café that makes the mug food-safe. For the dishwasher and the microwave, follow the advice of the café where you painted it.

Can I hold a birthday or hen party at a ceramic café?

Yes, many ceramic cafés host groups and can reserve a table or the whole room, with drinks and cake. In France, expect around €30 to €40 per person depending on the package; group terms are set by each café.
