Ceramispot is a platform designed for anyone who wants to rent a pottery wheel easily: to try it out, to practise at home or directly in a ceramics workshop, to improve, or to carry out a project without investing straight away.
Why rent a pottery wheel?
Renting is often the most flexible way to get started without tying up a large budget. It lets you try before you buy, practise without constraints, and choose a suitable model: a beginner, professional, electric or manual pottery wheel depending on your needs.
Try before you buy
A professional pottery wheel is an investment of several hundred to more than a thousand euros. When you are starting out, it is normal to hesitate. Renting lets you confirm your passion and practise on a quality model (Shimpo, Rohde, Brent…) before deciding whether to buy — new or second-hand.
Practise at home, even in a flat
In the city, you often want a stable, quiet wheel without turning your living room into a workshop. Home rental lets you equip yourself for a month or several, then return the wheel when you no longer need it. Models such as the Shimpo Whisper-T are specially designed for discreet use, ideal in a flat.
Get access to a wheel in a workshop
Would you rather practise in a suitable environment? Many ceramicists on Ceramispot offer access to a wheel in their workshop, by the hour or by the session. It is often the best option to start with: a suitable space, equipment already set up, and sometimes guidance to progress faster. Talk to the ceramicist through the Ceramispot messaging system to arrange your sessions.
Total flexibility: duration, mode, pace
Renting adapts to your needs: 1 month to try it out, 3 to 6 months to make real progress, 12 months+ for regular practice. Some owners even offer a buy-out at the end of the rental at a reduced price — a good way to be sure before investing.
How to rent a pottery wheel on Ceramispot?
The pottery wheel rental process takes four simple steps.
1. Find a wheel near you
Browse the listings available in your city or region. Each listing details the wheel type (electric, manual), the brand, the monthly price, the minimum duration and how it is made available (pick-up at the workshop, local delivery or delivery within France).
2. Send a rental request
Click “Request this wheel” and specify the duration you want, your level, and whether you prefer pick-up or delivery. You can also ask the owner any questions through the messaging system.
3. The owner approves and confirms
The ceramicist checks that the wheel is available and confirms the rental terms (deposit, delivery, condition of the equipment) through the Ceramispot messaging system. Secure payment is made online upon confirmation.
4. Pick up the wheel and practise
You pick up the wheel at the workshop or have it delivered to your home. Practise at your own pace for the whole rental period. At the end of the period: extend, return or buy the wheel if the option is offered.
Choosing the right pottery wheel to rent
The brands available on Ceramispot
Shimpo dominates the rental market with its Whisper-T (quiet, 300mm wheel head) and RK55 (sturdy, good value for money) models. Rohde is known for its durability in workshop use. Brent and Skutt are valued by professionals for their torque and their stability.
Selection criteria
To choose well, look above all at: stability (a wheel that vibrates makes centring difficult), torque at low speed (essential for large pieces), the noise level (important in a flat), and the wheel head diameter (250 to 350mm depending on the model, 300mm suits most projects).
Recommendations for your level
To start out, go for a quiet wheel with a progressive pedal such as the Shimpo Whisper-T — its ease of use speeds up learning. Experienced potters will prefer more powerful models (RK55, Rohde, Brent) able to centre large masses of clay.
| Brand / Model | Profile | Strengths | Ideal if… |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shimpo Whisper-T | Experienced / Pro | Very quiet, steady, pleasant in a flat | You throw often, sensitive neighbours |
| Shimpo RK55 | Beginner / hobby | Simple, reliable, quick to get to grips with | You are starting out, good value for money |
| Rohde (workshop range) | Beginner → Pro | Designed for "school/workshop" use, durable, stable | You want a versatile, sturdy wheel |
| Brent (B / C / CXC) | Pro / production | Ultra sturdy, stability, torque | You produce, throwing session after session |
| Skutt | Experienced / Pro | Good torque, solid build | You are looking for performance and comfort |
| Speedball Artista | Beginner / small space | Compact, portable (table-top) | You are short on space, light use |
| Vevor 450W | Budget beginner | Affordable (check stability / pedal) | You want to try at a lower cost |
Key point: for a sound choice, look above all at: stability, torque at low speed, noise level, and centring capacity.
Rental at home or in a workshop?
On Ceramispot, two rental modes exist side by side. Home rental lets you practise at home, at your own pace, with a wheel delivered or collected at the workshop. It is the most common mode for monthly rentals (1 to 12 months+). Workshop rental (access by the hour or by the session) gives you access to an equipped space, often with the option of guidance — ideal to start out or for those with no room at home.
